Contaminants of Emerging Concern are pollutants that are not currently considered by existing environmental-quality regulations, are thought to be potential threats to human health and environmental ecosystems or have not been studied previously.
One may assume that emerging pollutants will be a permanent research topic as new chemical compounds are continuously being produced while science improves its knowledge of the existing ones. Therefore, it is necessary to keep abreast of the different research lines that are being developed to study this type of pollutants.
That's why a cartographic viewer on Contaminants of Emerging Concern has been developed, with the aim of giving visibility to different research groups and institutions that presently are working with emerging contaminants. Any research group willing to participate in this initiative is welcome to complete a simple questionnaire and will be promptly included in the map viewer.
The collaborative map has been developed by the Geomatics Lab at the Institute IMDEA Water, together with the Center for the Knowledge of the Landscape (Centro para el Conocimiento del Paisaje) and the Research Center on Desertification (Centro de Investigaciones sobre Desertificación).

The imperviousness of the ground we step on (1). Main features

Imperviousness is a phenomenon closely associated with the continuous expansion of our way of life: we build houses, we make roads wider and wider, we build spaces for leisure, shopping, industry, commerce (Fig 1). The consequence is a continuous set of artificial surfaces that logically alter the natural dynamics of soils: they seal and waterproof them [1].

From the Geomatics perspective, the study of impervious  (or artificial) surfaces is a spatial challenge as well as socio-environmental, having developed strategies for its (1) inventory using both traditional technologies (Analog Cartography, Aerial Photography) [2], and the most modern ones (Remote Sensing) [3]., (2) synchronous and diachronic spatial analysis (through spatial metrics, Geographic Information Systems and Geostatistical applications) [4].; (3) the social repercussions (loss of quality and heritage value of the landscape) [5].,  and (4) environmental  threats (alteration of ecosystem services that the soil lends) among which the loss of water storage, the alteration of water connectivity between environmental compartments and the modification of the filter potential and regeneration of the quality of water that the soil possesses [6].
