Geomatics and Post-Fire Ash Hydrology

Wildfires produce profound changes in river catchments. After a fire, ash temporarily modifies the physical and chemical properties of soils, affecting infiltration, runoff, erosion, and water quality. “Post-fire ash hydrology” investigates how ash is mobilized by rainfall and transported into streams, reservoirs, and aquifers, influencing both ecosystems and drinking water supplies.
Geomatics has become an essential tool to evaluate these processes at multiple scales. Remote sensing allows mapping the severity of the fire using spectral indices such as dNBR and RdNBR, identifying the areas most likely to generate runoff and ash export. Drones, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), complement this information with very high-resolution images that allow quantifying ash cover, detecting erosive microforms and monitoring vegetation recovery.
For a more in-depth analysis, in addition to the information related to the ashes, other types of information managed with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) should be integrated. In such a way, the first information derived from the fires is integrated with, for example, digital terrain models, drainage networks, slopes and land uses to locate the critical areas of hydrological connectivity between the burned areas and the watercourses. In addition, distributed hydrological models incorporate parameters derived from remote sensing to simulate runoff generation, sediment transport and the temporal evolution of the hydrological recovery of the basin.
We must also consider the work on the ground as an strategic tool. To know more and better the dynamics of ash and its impact on post-fire hydrology requires an increasing integration between field observations, multi-temporal remote sensors, distributed hydrological models, Geographic Information Systems and artificial intelligence exploration. This holistic approach allows for the generation of dynamic risk mapping, optimising watershed restoration and prioritising actions to protect hydraulic infrastructures and water resources.
In a scenario of climate change, with more frequent and severe fires, geomatics is a strategic discipline to anticipate impacts, improve watershed management and increase the resilience of territories to the hydrological effects of post-fire ash.

Incendios forestales en España y aplicaciones geomáticas para la evaluación hidrológica postincendio/Wildfires in Spain and Geomatics Applications for Post-Fire Hydrological Assessment

Wildfires in Spain and Geomatics Applications for Post-Fire Hydrological Assessment

Although fires are recurrent events in Spain, the months of June and July 2026 are marked by one of the most severe forest fire seasons recorded in Spain in recent decades. The combination of an exceptionally dry previous situation with several consecutive heat waves, and low humidity of the vegetable fuel favoured the appearance of numerous Large Forest Fires (Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Aragon, Valencian Community, Catalonia).

Beyond the extensive ecological and socio-economic losses, these fires substantially modify watershed hydrological processes. Vegetation removal and changes in soil physical properties reduce infiltration, promote the development of water-repellent soils and increase surface runoff. Consequently, the risks of soil erosion, sediment transport, flash flooding and water quality degradation in rivers, reservoirs and wetlands increase considerably. The mobilisation of ash, nutrients and trace metals may also threaten drinking water supplies and aquatic ecosystems.

Figure 1. Alcublas Fire (Valencia, Spain). June 27, 2013.

Geomatics provides an essential framework for the rapid assessment of post-fire hydrological impacts. For example, freely available Sentinel-2 and Landsat imagery enables the delineation of burned areas and the estimation of fire severity using spectral indices such as the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) and the differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR). These products support the identification of priority areas for soil conservation and watershed restoration.

The integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), LiDAR-derived Digital Elevation Models, thematic spatial datasets and meteorological information provides the basis for distributed hydrological models such as SWAT, HEC-HMS, WEPP and HydroBID. These models simulate runoff generation, peak flows, sediment yield and nutrient transport under different rainfall scenarios, supporting post-fire restoration planning and water resource management.

Recent advances in cloud-based geospatial platforms, particularly Google Earth Engine, together with Copernicus and EFFIS services, now enable the mapping of burned areas and continuous monitoring of vegetation recovery. The integration of Earth Observation, GIS and hydrological modelling therefore represents a key strategy for enhancing watershed resilience and supporting sustainable water resources management under increasingly frequent and severe wildfire conditions.

Del Campo a la Cazuela: Riesgos hidroclimáticos y Gobernanza/From de Field to the Casserole: Hydroclimatic Risks an Governance

During his talk of the cycle “From Field to the Casserole” that took place at the end of February, Alejandro Liñayo, from the Center for Research in Integral Management and Risks-CIGIR, introduced us to the world of hydroclimatic risks andgovernance.

From his speech, two main ideas arise that are related to strengthening governance through research and technological innovation:

1.      1. The idea of knowing, which is based on the example of a study conducted by him on the distribution of floods in Spain based on historical records from over 2,000 years ago.

2.      2. Support for governance through technology was made clear with the example of building a digital twin for integrated water management.

Both cases are examples of that necessary interconnection between knowledge, management, technological development, and information so that citizens can build sufficient knowledge about potential risks, in this case hydroclimatic risks.

Del Campo a la Cazuela: Datos cultivados y datos no cultivados/From the Field to the Casserole: Cultivated and Non-cultivated Data

The december presentation of the cycle of Talks from the Field to the Casserole the harvest of raw material, or sampling strategies, was discussed. It was divided into the collection of cultivated data, by Vicente Andreu Pérez, and non-cultivated data crops, by Juan Antonio Pascual.

Regardless of the approach followed in the collection of samples, the speakers insisted on the need to establish clear criteria on the final objectives of obtaining the information, the collection systematics, the care taken for the collection of the data once in the field and the exquisiteness in its treatment once the sample material arrives in the kitchens/laboratories.

Both insisted on the use of new geolocation tools to prepare the field notebook and, when the data is measured constantly over time, the procedures for collecting and transmitting data with the Internet of Things.

Digital information collection systems are already established in standard practice for information collection in the field. They are, in fact, the natural alternative to the traditional field notebook. We will always have the memory and affinity for using paper and pencils to make observations, sketches and freehand drawings, but the versatility and ease provided by these new digital tools already make handwritten notes a romantic memory of the past. However, the number of applications that now exist freely accessible on application platforms for mobile devices can make us see more of the leaves or branches than the tree.

Not all these tools are the same and do the same things, it is a matter of knowing how to choose between the most appropriate taking into account our needs for collecting raw materials, according to the characteristics of the project.

Rafael Belda, has presented us in his talk "From the field to the casserole", precisely, a comparative analysis between three of these applications: KoboToolbox, QFIEL and Oruxmaps. He has insisted on the approaches to the collection and storage of the information made by each of them and the need to know the requirements of the project well in order to select the most suitable one.

"From the field to the casserole" is a series of talks that will be held at the IMDEA Water Institute. Its objective is to present works and lines of research in which the cooking cycle intervenes: from the collection of raw material (field data) to the preparation of tasty dishes (publications in scintific journals, for example). Logically, as it is a research center specialized in water resources, the common thread of the different culinary approaches that are presented is water.

The spatial component has been included in all the conferences, so Geomatics also has an important role. Over the course of five exhibitions we will see these different treatments that are given to the study of the characteristics of water, both in quantity and quality.

The “Geomática Agua Blog” will feature the presentations that are made as the cycle progresses. The first of these will be the introduction and presentation of the conferences. Today we limit ourselves to announcing them.

The Hydraulic Heritage Information System of the Community of Madrid (PAHCAM) is an initiative developed by the IMDEA Water Institute in collaboration with the Center for Landscape Knowledge. Its development has been possible thanks to an internal IMDEA Agua project, initiated as a specific line of research by the Geomatics Unit, almost a decade ago. Its mission is to incorporate new information technologies into the inventories and characterization of heritage elements related to water in the territorial area of the Community of Madrid. Without moving away from the general objective, as heritage has been identified and incorporated into the inventory, the need has also been seen to expand the initial conceptualization and determine in greater detail the scope of the use of new digital technologies to cover as widely as possible. knowledge of the hydraulic heritage of the Community, within the current approaches to cultural heritage, among which accessibility, open participatory systems and social involvement through citizen science stand out.

In its current version, the System has five sections (dictionary, documents, inventory, water itineraries and research) that cover the main aspects related to knowledge, dissemination, enhancement and application of disruptive technologies to the study of the Hydraulic Heritage of the Community of Madrid.

New issue of Notes on Geomatics

The new issue of Notes on Geomatics, Geomatics and its tools for the analysis of water resources in 2023, is, in fact, an update of a previous publication: Geomatics in the analysis of water resources (2018). The date that appears in the title is already indicative of the need to update the previous edition five years later and, also, to review the work areas and the applications that occur in them.

In this new issue, the general structure and organization by chapters of the previous version have been maintained. However, an exhaustive review of all the contents has been carried out so that they are adequately updated in terms of publications and lines of research and the validity and interest of the software presented. Likewise, all the works used as examples are freely accessible on INTERNET.

The content of the new issue inherits the thematic division of the 2018 publication. Although the specialized grouping of applications has been maintained as far as possible, some have been modified for thematic coherence and some new ones have also been incorporated, as a result of the logical evolution of digital structures, as is the case of accessibility to data and information repositories.

After the introduction to Geomatics and free access software applied in hydrology, the book has been divided into the following thematic sections:

A. Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing

B. Hydrological, hydraulic and hydrogeomorphological models (erosion)

C. Image analysis

D. Statistics and Geostatistics

E. Cartographic Quality

F. Support Programs

G. Data Systems

Nuevo número de Cuadernos de Geomática Aplicada/New issue of Notes on Geomatics

New issue of Notes on Geomatics

The recent research on the presence of cyanobacteria in inland waters developed within the framework of the CianoMOD project (led by researchers from the IMDEA Water Institute) has made possible to establish a comprehensive and integrated methodological procedure that is shown in the publication entitled " Procedures for the analysis of inland water quality parameters related to cyanobacterial blooms”, which corresponds to number 8 of the series of Notes on Geomatics.
It includes, in addition to the introductory chapter on the problem of cyanobacterial blooms, six works that synthesize different strategies for analyzing and presenting data from the target study areas of the CianoMOD project, the Albufera de Valencia lagoon and the As Conchas Reservoir. A second chapter is devoted to the evaluation of parameters related to water quality and cyanobacteria included in time series collected by competent water authorities. Two contributions focus on the spatial analysis of land use-cover dynamics with Geographic Information Systems (chapter 3) and the assessment of the use of remote sensing images for the spatial distribution of chlorophyll in the studied water bodies (chapter 4).
Chapters 5, 6 and 7 are a summary of the strategy developed in the CianoMOD project for the continuous and remote monitoring of water quality parameters, including the sensor installation system, information collection and data transmission (chapter 5), the implementation of a query system for the data received on the INTERNET (chapter 6) and the development of statistical models (chapter 7) based on the data measured by the systems installed in both study areas.
